GPS 2.0: Improving Maps, One User at a Time

Social networks are not limited to just the internet. GPS technology too traversed into the 2.0 realm with user-generated map improvements.

Making Maps 2.0

TomTom, the worldwide leader in portable navigation solutions, has made significant gains with its proprietary Map Improvement technology. The company has received well over one million map improvements from its global community of users since launching the service in July 2007. More than a half million users have joined the Map Share community since its inception. Together, these users ensure that drivers have the most up to date and accurate maps available in the entire GPS industry.

Sharing Data, One Map at a Time

Considering the success, it is no surprise that TomTom executives are pleased that the Map Share service is incredibly embraced by the user community. The contributions of individual users create collective benefits that make each driver’s day easier.

Road conditions change each and every day, often when you least expect it. Traditionally, navigation solutions providers could not deliver maps that were current enough to meet the needs of drivers. With TomTom’s Map Improvement technology, drivers now have the ability to improve their own maps. The process can be done ease directly on your GPS device.

In addition, TomTom users can benefit from all the improvements made by users in the community, enhancing their road knowledge each day at no additional cost. The more the Map Share community connects their GPS to TomTom HOME, the more accurate and up to date their maps will be. While competition is growing more intense in the GPS industry, TomTom is currently the only navigation solutions provider that offers customers such an innovative and effective service.

Out of all the map improvements that have been uploaded to TomTom HOME, an estimated two-thirds of them can be fixed instantly. The remainder is sent out to the TomTom development team. TomTom developers are working vigorously to implement new features and fix various errors to further improve the service.

Benefits of TomTom Map Share

TomTom’s map improving technology offers many benefits to drivers all over the world. Some of the most notable include:

– The ability to improve maps when you detect road changes with a few simple touches on the screen of your GPS device

– The ability to receive and share map improvements with other community users

– The assurance of having the most recent data and up-to-date maps at all times

Map Share Availability

TomTom Map Share is currently available over five continents in 30 countries. The service is offered at no additional cost in various TomTom devices, including Tomtom GOx20(T), Tomtom ONE 3rd Edition and the Tomtom ONE XL (T) product line. Tomtom GO x 10 series, Tomtom GO 500, Tomtom GO 700, Tomtom ONE XL and Tomtom ONE 1st and 2nd Edition GPS devices are also compatible with the latest Map Share software. Drivers who do not have a GPS device can benefit from Map Share by using TomTom’s online route planner.

With everyone jumping on the 2.0 bandwagon, drivers can enjoy a smoother, faster, and more effective ride.

I wish Garmin would catch on and offer the ability for users to submit map improvements. On my Nuvi 205 I have the latest downloaded maps, yet I’ve still been directed to business locations that have been closed down for over a year.
