How to Use Google Maps with Your TomTom

How to Use Google Maps with Your TomTom

Leading GPS device maker TomTom has engaged in a partnership with internet powerhouse Google to make it easier for users to upload destination data to their in-vehicle GPS system.  By following the instructions in this article, you can easily click “send” in Google Maps to upload locations and destinations to your TomTom unit.  The feature is incredibly useful for quickly uploading data you may need for a business trip or family vacation.  With your destinations pre-installed as favorites, you can simply focus on your trip, instead of trying to figure out how to get to the next destination.

You need a fully compatible TomTom

In order to make use of the feature, you must have a TomTom brand in-vehicle GPS receiver.  As of now, Google Maps is not compatible with any other brand.

Install TomTom HOME

Install the TomTom HOME software from the disk that came with your GPS device.  Be sure that the software is up to date with the latest version.  This can be done for free at the TomTomPLUS Services web page.  There you will find software that is compatible for both Windows and Mac computers.

Establish a connection

Connect the GPS receiver to your computer with the provided USB cable or docking station.  Turn on the unit, and press “Yes” when it asks you to connect it to the computer.  After connecting, you are now ready to search for destinations and upload them to your GPS device.  Simply launch your preferred web browser and head to Google Maps.

Find your destination on Google Maps

Enter a destination into the Google Maps “Search Maps” box.  Similar to its search engine, Google Maps has powerful search capabilities, making it ideal for using with your GPS unit.

Once you have specified your destination, click on the “send” link in the top-right corner of the destination map window.  A dialog box will be displayed, giving you the option to send the destination to your car, email or GPS device.  Select GPS and it will automatically initiate the TomTom HOME software with the chosen destination and its exact coordinates in place.

From here, the TomTom Home software will capture the selected destination, giving you the option of displaying the data on a simulated GPS map, navigating to the destination, or saving it to your favorites file.  Many users find that saving to favorites is the most useful of the three options.

Something to keep in mind…

After mastering Google Maps-toGPS, you can quickly and easily update your favorite locations and effectively plan your trips based on pre-selected and pre-installed destinations.  In the end, you will spend more time having fun or taking care of business and less time searching for destinations.

Though very useful, it is important to note that you may not be able to find all addresses and locations with this feature in Google Maps.  In addition, if you don’t see “GPS “in the Google Maps display window, you will not be able to send the destination to your GPS receiver.
