Engadget has recently discovered that the long-awaited nuvifone, a device they have been speculating about now for more than a year, has finally received approval from the FCC.

With the recent announcement of Garmin joining the Open Handset Alliance, the developers (supported by Google) of the open Android mobile phone platform, there is much speculation about how this may impact their upcoming nuvifone handset.

DigiTimes reports Mio will launch a 3.5G handset with GPS sometime during the first quarter of 2009. This launch places Mio’s entry into the mobile handset arena just a bit ahead of Garmin’s nuvifone.
